Solar, batteries, and roofing in La Verne

VertX is headquartered in West Covina, about 20 min from La Verne. We design, permit, and manage solar, Tesla Powerwall, and roofing projects for La Verne homeowners, with licensed crews and one company accountable for the whole job.

What's different in La Verne

Four things that shape your project.

Utility and rates

La Verne is served by Southern California Edison. New solar systems go on SCE's net billing tariff (NEM 3.0), which pays very little for power you export, so we size every system to your actual usage and usually pair it with a battery so your evening hours run on your own stored power instead of the most expensive grid rates.

Permits

Building and electrical permits in La Verne are issued by the City of La Verne Building Department at 3660 D Street. VertX prepares the plan set, files the application, and schedules the final inspection; you sign, we handle the rest.

La Verne was one of the first cities in the valley to plug SolarAPP+ into its own permit portal. A licensed contractor starts the solar permit in the city portal, the design is checked automatically through SolarAPP+, the approval number is linked back, and inspections are scheduled online. The Building Department is open Monday through Thursday and closed Fridays, which matters for inspection scheduling.

Fire and outages

More than a third of La Verne, including most of North La Verne above Baseline Road, is a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the city adopted CAL FIRE's expanded 2025 map by ordinance in May 2025. Northern La Verne has already lived through SCE Public Safety Power Shutoffs, including the December 2020 wind event, and the Bridge Fire put the city under evacuation warnings in September 2024. For hillside homes here a Tesla Powerwall is less about the electric bill and more about keeping the house running when SCE cuts power on a red-flag day.

Homes and roofs

La Verne has about 12,000 homes and roughly 69 percent are owner-occupied. The median home was built in 1976: the flats south of Foothill are largely 1960s and 1970s tracts on composition shingle, while the newer foothill tracts and gated communities such as Live Oak, La Verne Heights, and Marshall Canyon run to larger two-story homes with concrete tile. Old Town and the Lordsburg district around D Street hold the city's oldest homes, some from the early 1900s.

The Old Town and Lordsburg specific plans carry design review for visible exterior changes in the historic core, and the gated foothill communities have HOA architectural committees. California's Solar Rights Act limits what either can require of a rooftop system, and we prepare the application packet either way.

La Verne questions

Straight answers.

Does La Verne get Public Safety Power Shutoffs?

Yes. The high fire risk areas of North La Verne are on SCE circuits that have been de-energized during Santa Ana wind events, including December 2020. A grid-tied solar system shuts off during a shutoff by code, so if your goal is to keep power on, the system needs a battery. A Tesla Powerwall isolates the house from the grid and lets the panels keep charging it through the day.

How does the solar permit work in La Verne?

La Verne uses SolarAPP+ inside its own online permit portal. We start the permit in the city portal, the design is checked automatically by SolarAPP+, and the approval number is linked back to the city application. Inspections are scheduled online. Note the Building Department is closed on Fridays, so we plan inspections Monday through Thursday.

Do fire-zone rules change how my La Verne roof is built?

If you are in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, which covers more than a third of the city and most of North La Verne, a reroof must meet the city's wildfire construction chapter and the state's Chapter 7A standards: Class A roof assembly, ember-resistant vents, and enclosed eaves where required. GAF and Owens Corning shingle systems and concrete tile both qualify, and we specify the assembly on the permit so there are no surprises at inspection.

I live in Old Town or Lordsburg. Can I still put solar on my roof?

Yes. The Old Town and Lordsburg specific plans add design review for visible exterior changes, but California law protects your right to install solar, and the city's permit process treats rooftop solar as an expedited application. We lay out the array to keep it off street-facing slopes where the roof allows and include the layout in the application.

My HOA in Live Oak or La Verne Heights has an architectural committee. Will that block solar?

It cannot block it. California's Solar Rights Act keeps HOAs from prohibiting solar and limits their conditions to ones that do not meaningfully raise the cost or cut the output of the system. Most committees want an application with the layout and equipment, which we prepare alongside the city permit.
